After getting reacquainted with this program, I found it to be less frustrating than my past experience and editing this photo was actually a lot of fun. Using duplicated layers and filters, I came up with this interesting frame. GIMP has some fun filters, and some are a lot different than the ones in Photoshop.
After all my adjusting, I ended up with a lovely photo. I chose JPG format with the highest quality settings. To save your image for sharing online, go to File > Export As.
Go to Image > Scale Image to open the options box. Sometimes I think it’s necessary to go back and forth and use the same adjustments more than once to get the photo just right.īefore exporting, you might want to change the size of the picture. I adjusted the levels again, then the curves, and then the color balance after that. The bottom anchor point prevents the curve from dipping down into the shadows. Pull the bottom anchor point away in the opposite direction to create a dramatic conrast. Drag the top anchor point away from the line and you will see the photo begin to contrast. Click once toward the bottom of the line to set your first anchor point, and then click again toward the top to make another. In the Curves box, there is a grid with a diagonal line running through it. Using Curves to create nice contrast is a better alternative to using Brightness-Contrast, as it allows for more control over the light, mid, and shadow ranges. Drag the middle slider to the left until your photo is as light as you’d like it, and then drag the left slider to the right just slightly. I lightened the photo using Levels (Color > Levels). Hue-Saturation settings will vary for different photos. The gif below only shows Yellow being adjusted. I think I ended up with Yellow at around -33, and Red at around -27. In the Hue-Saturation box, select Yellow and bring down the saturation. I personally found the results are better when using Hue-Saturation before Color Balance in this program. On the menu bar, go to Colors > Hue-Saturation (under Color Balance). Note: I figured that adjusting the Color Balance first, out of habit, would be okay and I took this screen shot before making any adjustments at all. Go to View > Zoom > Fit Image in Window (Ctrl+Shift+J) to make the image larger in the window so you can see your editing work better. Your image will now take up a bit less of the screen, depending on how much you cropped. Click on the image and drag to create the crop box frame your subject. (I closed the program and didn’t save the screencap for this one- sorry!) Next, select the Crop tool. You can still rotate freely by dragging once the dialog box is open.
If you clicked on the icon in the Toolbox, click & drag on the photo to rotate. Click the duplicate layer button so that you are not editing the original, in case you need to duplicate it again. A nice feature about GIMP is this button on the layers panel that will duplicate the layer you have selected, saving you a whole. Start by opening the photo (File > Open, or Ctrl+O).

You can download it for free at I made this tutorial based on my basic photo editing for Photoshop tutorial, adjusting the steps for the program, and chose a photo with similar lighting. It’s a great, economical substitute for Photoshop, and seems to have more similarities to PS than I remember. I’m not sure if I was just being stubborn when I first used it and I’m remembering it wrong, but the newest version seems a lot easier to use. I recall this program being difficult to learn, tedious, and nothing like Photoshop. Until yesterday, it had been at least 6 years since I last used it. Then, to merge that layer back down again, go to the Image menu and pick Merge Visible Layers ( Ctrl-M ).Here’s another simple photo editing tutorial, this time for GIMP 2.8 (GNU Image Manipulation Program). With that window open, you can click on the existing layer in the image (probably Background), and then click on the Duplicate Layer button below - or press Shift-Ctrl-D. Choose Layer > Smart Objects > Stack Mode and select a stack mode from the submenu.Choose Layer > Smart Objects > Convert to Smart Object.Download ready-made solutions and put your unique ideas into practice.
